We spent 2 days with our high school students serving in various capacities during their Spring Break week. One of the days we served the homeless community of Santa Ana. During our day there I spent 2 hours “talking” with a man named Gary. However he is deaf & mute man. I know minimal sign language (but I know a lot more now) so needless to say writing was our form of communication. But in the two hours I talked with Gary I was humbled & encouraged by a man who is willing to wrestle with faith.
He’s recently homeless due to a fire at his apartment complex. He has a good head on his shoulders, he is trying to reconnect with family across the country and he is trying to live for God. He has a relationship with Jesus & is trying to ask the question of “Why. Why does God allow bad things to happen to peoples lives?”
Gary didn’t want money or a hand out but thoroughly enjoyed the conversation as well as the hug I gave him. He wrote “it’s been awhile since I had a hug”…seriously? That broke me.
I saved some of the notes Gary & I wrote on as a reminder. A reminder that human life is precious regardless of the age. A person is a person regardless of their social or economic status. We are called to partner with Christ for His kingdom and His Kingdom is centered in on humanity.
