We had an extensive conversation about people serving in ministry.
There were two sides of the conversation. People must be called to serve effectively & People must be asked to serve to find out if their could be a calling on thier life.
I look at it this way...
In our student ministry 90% of the volunteers we have were asked to serve and found a passion in doing it. Only 10% have had an initial calling before i asked them and they usually came to me to see if they could serve.
I believe that when people have a calling in thier life they are more open to God's moving in thier lives. But i have not always seem them serve with more dedication that those called. I have seen those that have been asked to serve find a passion and rythm in thier lives where they give of themselves with passion and love for what God is doing in the lives of others. I believe that many people never know where to serve or what their passions could be if they are not offered a spot to serve.
If we wait for people to sense that calling in thier lives we may always be waiting for people to come along side of us to impact people.
Why should we not ask people to serve?
Just some random thoughts from a really long staff meeting.
